About the HōM Modality

  • What is the Hierarchy of Movement modality?

Hierarchy of Movement ("HōM") is a healing modality created by Norman Allard. It incorporates lessons learned from Allard's studies of Qi Gong, meditation, sports medicine, yoga, chiropractic medicine, Pilates, Feldenkrais, breath work, olympic weight training, and more.

The purpose of HōM is to increase awareness of body and mind, reduce physical and emotional pain, and cultivate increased freedom of movement.

After completing the initial onboarding process, students of HōM learn the modality through virtual group movement classes. Students can choose to take classes "live" or to take the recording at a time which works for them.

Students can practice the HōM modality on its own or as a supplement to their other sport, movement, or healing practices. Though if you're adding new practices to your life experience, it's best to add one type of practice at a time. That way you may have an easier time assessing the value of the new practice.

  • How Do I Start?

All new students of the HōM modality begin with the Foundations Program. The Foundations Program is a mandatory prerequisite for all HōM courses. It is a self-paced, virtual course through which you, as a new HōM student, learn the basics and the philosophy of the HōM modality to ensure you can successfully complete and benefit from other courses in the HōM catalog.

During your Foundations Program, you have at least two meetings with your Movement Coaches, Norman or Debra, to discuss your progress. Meetings generally take place virtually to accommodate students worldwide. In-person 1:1 meetings are available to those who live in or can travel to Boulder, CO USA.

Students typically complete the program over a span of no less than four and no more than eight weeks, and dedicate 2-4 hours per week to their studies.

  • Who Should Practice the HōM Modality?

You! You're invited to learn and practice the HōM modality as we keep learning too.

Norman's work supports two groups in particular. First, he supports athletes and movement artists seeking to improve their performance.

Second, Allard's work supports those with physical pain or discomfort, limited range of motion, or imbalances such as scoliosis, anxiety, and/or depression.

In cases of limitations that concern you, speak to your health care practitioner per our Terms of Use. You are welcome to also text Norman and the two of you can have a chat about a possible next step in your learning. The best way to get on Norman's schedule is to text him with a short request.

  • Am I Too Old or Young to Practice the HōM Modality?

As long as you're 18 or over, you're good to go! And if you're 13-17 and have a guardian signing you up and supervising, that works too (see Terms of Use).

Practitioners of any age can benefit from the HōM modality. In fact, one student recently told us their only complaint is that they didn't know Norman Allard sooner! The HōM modality allows your mind and body to thrive in your everyday activities -- including sports and exercise -- and supports your body and mind through the aging process. The earlier you start, the more you'll see in terms of physical and mental connection, coordination, and control.

  • Can the HōM modality be used preventatively?

Yes! Waiting until symptoms appear to start your HōM practice is like waiting until you need a root canal to go to the dentist! Just as it's easier, less painful, and less time consuming to preventatively care for your teeth, it's easier, less painful, and less time consuming to practice preventative care for your body.

Fixing acute difficulties when you're hurting can certainly be addressed with Norman Allard. That work gets you to the beginning of what we offer you. Norman's patients become his students for this very reason. You don't need to start with a strong difficulty, though. Start early to save yourself pain in the long-run.

Beware the pitfalls of waiting until there's something wrong.

  • Do I need equipment to practice the HōM modality?

For most classes we recommend you have a sticky yoga mat, a sturdy chair, and two 4" yoga blocks. Some classes do require special equipment.

Want to know what Norman recommends? Please visit our Equipment Page to learn more.

  • How much time do I need to dedicate to the HōM modality?

Have you ever played a musical instrument? Or learned a special dance or a sport? Or maybe you learned to type with all your fingers? If so, you know the more you practice, the more familiar the movements become, and the better you get. The same is true for learning the HōM modality.

While the movement and awareness practices taught in HōM may seem simple, repeated, intentional practice of HōM creates profound, long-lasting change throughout the mind and body.

It's best to practice no fewer than two times per week on an ongoing basis. The more you practice, the more benefits you'll will experience.

Students may practice on their own utilizing the sequences learned in the Foundations Program, or may practice alongside Norman Allard through his live, online classes, or enjoy the pre-recorded classes in the HōM library.

  • How soon will I feel the results? How will I know I'm getting "the right" results?

The HōM modality is a slow process. You will likely experience it as a subtle process.

Everyone's experience is individual to them. We've heard of dramatic results within a few days. For others, the dramatic changes happened after 3-7 years.

We're here to help you. Attend the coaching calls if you're in the Foundations Program and/or text us with questions.

About Foundations

  • What is the Foundations Program?

All new students of the HōM modality begin with the Foundations Program.

The Foundations Program is a mandatory prerequisite for all HōM courses. It is a self-paced, virtual course through which you, as a new HōM student, learn the basics and the philosophy of the HōM modality to ensure you can successfully enjoy, complete, and benefit from other courses in the HōM catalog.

During your Foundations Program, you have at least two meetings with your educators, Norman or Debra, to discuss your progress. Meetings may take place in groups or 1:1 depending on your requests for support. Meetings generally take place virtually to accommodate students worldwide. In-person 1:1 meetings are available to those who live in or can travel to Boulder, CO USA.

Students typically complete the Foundations Program over a span of no less than four and no more than eight weeks, and dedicate 2-4 hours per week to their studies.

Ready to get started with Foundations? The first step is to complete our New Student Onboarding questionnaire. Click here to begin! We'll provide you with next steps at the completion of your assessment.

  • Is it okay if I start new practices while I take Foundations?

In Norman's experience, starting more than one new thing will overload your nervous system with too much information (even if it's all great information). This will create confusion as well as diminish the benefits that each system can provide. For instance, if you're feeling better or worse, it would be very difficult to determine what is causing what.

Norman is of the opinion that if you're starting some other interventions, go do those for 3-4 months and then, if you're still interested in Norman's work, come back to us. We'll be delighted to work with you.

It's so easy for any of us to try to accelerate our healing processes by "throwing" many things at what we perceive to be our "problem." In fact, sometimes that's part of the problem - anxiousness and stress driving us to want to fix something NOW. It kinda reminds us of the fable of the tortoise and the hare. With 40+ years of helping himself and others, Norman likes to say his "power animal" is a turtle. Slow and steady is actually the way to win the race.

Norman truly cares about your wellbeing. He feels this is a much better plan than trying to fit many things in at once.

  • How long does it take to complete Foundations?

The Foundations Program has a four-week curriculum. Students generally dedicate 2-4 hours per week to their studies (but 2x's/day of practice is highly recommended).

While the program can be comfortably completed in four weeks, students are allowed up to eight weeks to complete the program.

If you can't complete the program within eight weeks, you can purchase the course again, though we don't really want that!

Therefore, before enrolling in Foundations, please make sure you're committed to taking the course and can reasonably complete it within eight weeks.

  • How will I know I'm "doing it right" in the Foundations Program?

Not to worry! We have established times for you to check in with us during your Foundations Program (i.e. Coaching Calls!). And, you can always text us to ask any questions you may have.

  • What happens after Foundations?

Once you complete The Foundations Program, you become a Foundations Graduate!

Graduates are invited explore a large catalog of live and recorded classes led by Norman.

Foundations Graduates are encouraged to continue their healing process beyond Foundations by practicing three times each week, either on their own or by taking Norman's live or recorded courses.

In live classes, Graduates will have the opportunity to meet the many other incredible folks who are learning with us.

Graduates can choose to purchase post-Foundations courses a la carte, or to enroll in our Monthly Membership program. Monthly Members enjoy unlimited access to Norman's vast library of teachings which draw upon his 40+ years of experience as a healer. To learn more about membership, visit our membership page.

Scholarships and Membership

  • Is there a way to save money through a membership?

There sure is! The best way to soak up all of Allard's teachings is to become a member. Members enjoy unlimited, 24/7 access to an ever-growing library of courses, as well as admission to every live class for no additional cost.

Students become eligible for membership as soon as they complete the Foundations Program. To learn more about membership, visit our membership page.

  • Do you offer scholarships?

Absolutely. Norman believes anyone who is committed to healing through the HōM modality should be able do so regardless of ability to pay. To apply for a scholarship, email Debra at [email protected].

  • Do I have to wait until the first of the month to buy the month-long membership?

No. The membership fee is billed on the date membership is purchased, and then on or about that same day of the month every month thereafter.

For example: If you purchase your membership on the 14th, for example, you will be billed each month on or about the 14th.

Each month, payment will be automatically charged to the credit card added to your account when you first enrolled in membership. You'll want to make sure to keep that card current so you don't lose access to your membership. (Go to My Account under your name in the top right corner of the screen, click on Billing, you can update your credit card there.)

  • Can I cancel my membership at any time?

While we'll be sorry to see you go, yes you can! Go to My Account (under your name in the top right) and click on Billing. Click on the Cancel button under subscriptions. Your membership will continue until the end of your membership month and then will not renew again.

Thus, if you have not completed the required prerequisites, you may receive a notification.

If you have completed the required prerequisites and are still receiving the notification, please ensure you are logged in and try again.
